Episode 2The Blank Box: Your Business Description Is Empty and It’s Hurting You
Most local listings leave the roughly 750-character business description completely blank — and when customers are choosing between two or three similar shops, that little paragraph is often the only thing that separates them. This episode gives you the four-sentence formula to fill yours in about fifteen minutes, plus the rules Google enforces on it.
Key takeaways
- Sentence one: say what you are and where you are. Name the trade and the town — a family-owned bakery in downtown Barrington, a plumbing company serving Barrington and the surrounding suburbs.
- Sentence two: name what you actually do, in the words customers use. People do not search for “comprehensive culinary solutions.” They search for wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and coffee.
- Sentence three: give one true reason to trust you. How long you have been at it, that you are family-owned, that the owner is on site, that you answer your own phone. Only things that are genuinely true — the review section right below will grade the promise.
- Sentence four: end with a plain invitation. Stop in. Call for a quote. Book online. Say the natural next step plainly.
- Do not put your phone number or website address in the description, and do not keyword-stuff it. Google has separate fields for contact details, and descriptions that break the formatting rules can be rejected or edited.
- You edit it in your Google Business Profile manager, under your business information — and keep it current when you move, change hours in a big way, or drop a service.
